Palm Oil’s Green Transformation: Are You Ready for the Future?

Malaysia is proactively addressing the challenges posed by the EU’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which bans imports of commodities linked to deforestation. Set to take effect on December 30, 2025, the EUDR mandates companies to provide evidence that their supply chains do not contribute to forest destruction. Recognizing the potential impact on approximately 450,000 small-scale palm oil producers, the Malaysian government is implementing initiatives to assist these producers in complying with the new standards. This includes capacity-building efforts focusing on sustainability, traceability, and adherence to labor practices aligned with International Labour Organization standards.

Despite these regulatory challenges, the palm oil industry is exploring innovative agricultural practices to enhance sustainability. Regenerative agriculture, which involves mixed cropping and reduced chemical use, offers a promising approach to improving climate resilience and soil health. Pilot projects in Southeast Asia, such as those in Sumatra and Malaysian Borneo, aim to develop sustainable palm oil supply chains while protecting vital ecosystems. These initiatives demonstrate the potential for agroforestry-based oil palm production to be both profitable and environmentally friendly, though widespread adoption across the $70 billion industry remains limited.

Central to the promotion of sustainable palm oil is the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a global, non-profit organization established in 2004. The RSPO brings together stakeholders from across the palm oil supply chain to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil. By setting environmental and social criteria, the RSPO ensures that certified sustainable palm oil minimizes negative impacts on the environment and local communities. As of 2024, the RSPO has over 5,650 members from 94 countries, reflecting a broad commitment to transforming the sector toward sustainability.

These developments underscore a global shift in the palm oil industry toward more sustainable practices, balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
