B40 Biodiesel and Global Trends Reshaping the Palm Oil Industry

Palm oil industry is experiencing significant changes driven by evolving regulations, market dynamics, and rising sustainability demands. One key development involves the European Union’s (EU) decision to postpone its anti-deforestation regulation by a year, now scheduled to take effect on December 30, 2025, for large corporations. This policy requires commodities such as palm oil entering EU markets to be certified as deforestation-free, prompting producers to enhance supply chain transparency and adopt responsible sourcing practices.

In response to such regulatory pressures, Malaysia has acknowledged both challenges and opportunities presented by the EU’s forthcoming law. Deputy Commodities Minister Chan Foong Hin emphasized the importance of understanding the regulation’s impact to adapt domestic practices and maintain market access.

On the demand side, India’s palm oil imports are projected to reach a five-year low in January 2025, primarily due to negative refining margins and a price premium over soy oil. This shift underscores the need for competitive pricing strategies and diversification to retain market share in key importing countries.

Despite these challenges, the global palm oil market is poised for growth. Reports indicate that the market, valued at US$79.3 billion in 2023, is projected to reach approximately US$117.9 billion by 2030, driven by applications in food, personal care, and biofuel industries.

Sustainability remains a central focus, with countries like Papua New Guinea officially joining the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) to promote sustainable palm oil practices.

Additionally, Indonesia has imposed restrictions on the export of used cooking oil and palm oil residue to support its domestic biodiesel industry, aligning with its B40 biodiesel mandate.

These developments highlight the importance of strategic adaptation, investment in sustainable practices, and proactive engagement with regulatory frameworks to navigate the evolving landscape of the global palm oil industry.
